Low calorie days…<\/span><\/p>\n by Adele Johnston T<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Contact Section Subtitle” _builder_version=”3.27.4″ text_font_size=”16px” text_line_height=”1.9em” text_orientation=”center” max_width=”710px” module_alignment=”center” min_height=”936px” custom_margin=”||-110px|||” custom_padding=”||0px|||” animation_style=”fold” animation_direction=”bottom” animation_intensity_fold=”20%”]<\/p>\n \n <\/span><\/p>\n That\u2019s low but\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n I\u2019m sure by now your mailbox has gone ping wild with all the \u201cOMFG 800 calories are they mad\u201d email responses to the Channel 4 \u2018Lose a Stone in 21 Days with Michael Mosley\u2019.<\/p>\n \n Maybe not and I\u2019m the first.<\/p>\n \n So here\u2019s the summary;<\/p>\n \n basically Channel4 launch this very low calorie diet (VLCD) for rapid weight loss and film obese participants through their journey with Dr Michael Mosely \u2013 who ladies, just for full clarity, is a documentary maker and journalist for the BBC; and has been for the last 25 years \u2013 not a practicing doctor, I feel that #fact is pretty dang important here.<\/p>\n \n He\u2019s aiming this rapid weight loss at those \u201cin need of a post-lockdown health overhaul\u201d<\/p>\n \n Calm down Michael, you\u2019re getting ahead of yourself a little here mate, surely a \u201chealth overhaul\u201d is a bit more multifaceted and putting someone on an 800 calorie \u2018cookie cutter\u2019 style diet for 21 days is factually not going to give them a health overhaul.<\/p>\n \n Next he\u2019ll be claiming it takes 21 days to break an old habit and create a new one, justifying the timescale. We all know that\u2019s not true right, it\u2019s different for everyone and habitual formation isn\u2019t as simple as \u2018just\u2019 stopping something or \u2018starting\u2019 something.<\/p>\n \n Anyway back to Channel4 and Michael (no doctor in my eyes, sorry mate)<\/p>\n \n Then there\u2019s the \u2018criteria\u2019 for this so called \u201chealth overhaul\u201d [insert rolling eyes emoji here]<\/p>\n \n Ready\u2026<\/p>\n \n Open quote \u201c<\/p>\n \n \n Close quote \u201c<\/p>\n \n Alright, so now that\u2019s there in black and white and we know what the prime time TV coverage will air for our entertainment (let\u2019s be real here, that\u2019s what it\u2019s all about, air time content)<\/p>\n \n I\u2019m uneasy\u2026<\/p>\n \n And so are Beat, a leading eating disorder charity in the UK, so much so they\u2019re having to increase their helpline hours for this airing.<\/p>\n \n The charity has already seen a 50% increase in calls since the start of lockdown and has seen a 78% rise in contact via social media (figures compared with February 2020).<\/p>\n \n If you are anxious or seeking support at this time for disordered eating or an eating disorder, please visit them here https:\/\/<\/p>\n \n Now for my input \u2013 the nutrition knowledge \u2013 sorry\/not sorry Michael I don\u2019t deem you to have any but you\u2019re blood great at profiteering from such shows,<\/p>\n \n I\u2019m not against very low calorie diets, they have a place, In the right situations for some people \u2013 in fact I have a client just now cycling 2 low calorie days to support her weight loss; but I monitor her constantly and am trained and qualified to know how to support her with that.<\/p>\n \n I am however against a prime time TV channel with a journalist who never actually became a practicing doctor \u2013 he went straight into becoming a trainee assistance producer at the BBC after completing medical school \u2013 influencing vulnerable people in desperate need for help watching this.<\/p>\n \n Whilst I\u2019m not against very low calorie diets for some people, they need to managed, monitored and CANNOT last for a long time.<\/p>\n \n But my biggest vent with all of this is the fact that these obese and overweight individuals will join Michael for the 21 days and drop body fat. They will not however be educated during those 21 days on how to sustain and the biggest success factor in any weight loss journey MAINTAIN their losses.<\/p>\n \n Trust me when I say it\u2019s the maintenance part of your journey that needs support and guidance just as much as the loss stage.<\/p>\n \n And do we think come day 22 these people will be supported afterwards to continue their journey effectively and in a healthy manner (health is more than just vitamins and minerals ladies, it\u2019s multifaceted and includes mental health as well \u2013 food and body relationships). Don\u2019t have that support, you will revert back to what you knew before the 21 days started.<\/p>\n \n I\u2019m sad about this more than angered.<\/p>\n \n It\u2019s nothing more than a financial cash out at vulnerable peoples expense.<\/p>\n \n The even sadder thing is, it will be widely watched and some will copy what they \u2018tell\u2019 not realising the long term impacts for them and their children.<\/p>\n \n Please if you\u2019re reading this, do me and you a big ass favour and go re-read it!<\/p>\n \n Take it in, digest it and promise yourself kindness and compassion for the decisions you make for your health and your body next.<\/p>\n \n And for the love of god promise me you won\u2019t take nutrition advice from Michael!<\/p>\n \n My DM\u2019s and mailbox are always open for you, don\u2019t sit there lost or stuck, I\u2019ve got you girl!
