What Actually Works & What to Avoid
Let’s dive straight in with a truth bomb… fat loss during perimenopause and menopause can feel like trying to run up a hill in sand (aka, not easy)
Your body is changing, and together we’re going to walk through how to support it in a safe, sustainable and real way, minus the shame, the judgement or the quick-fix gimmicks.
As a professional woman in midlife, you’ve got enough going on without battling misinformation. So today, we’re busting myths and getting real about fat burners, hormones, and what actually works for fat loss in menopause.
What’s Really Happening With Your Body?
As we transition through menopause, our hormones, particularly estrogen, decline.
That natural shift affects:
- Metabolism – slowing it down due to factors relating to e.g. muscle mass reduction over time
- Muscle mass – reduces which impacts how efficiently we burn energy – the more we have the more energy we require
- Fat storage – increasing belly fat, especially visceral fat which is dangerous for us
- Insulin sensitivity – which can lead to more cravings and blood sugar dips
None of this means you’ve failed, it means you need a new, tailored strategy.
What worked at 30 might not work now, and that’s OK.
Some of the fat burners I’ve been asked about over the years include:
1) Clenbuterol (A Hard No 🚫)
I’ve had women quietly ask me about it, and it’s time we stop whispering and talk openly.
Clenbuterol is not approved for human use in the UK or the US. It’s dangerous, full stop. Heart palpitations, anxiety, insomnia, and muscle wastage which is a hard no, especially when preserving muscle is vital in menopause.
Please don’t risk your health for a shortcut. There are far safer, effective, evidence-backed options that love your body rather than fight it.
2) GLP-1: A Hormone That Supports Fat Loss
Something you might not know is that GLP-1 is a naturally occurring hormone in your body that:
- Regulates appetite
- Slows digestion (so you feel fuller for longer)
- Stabilises blood sugar
When used medically (under names like Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro), it can support fat loss, but, and this is important, if you’re not pairing it with protein-rich nutrition and resistance training, you risk losing precious muscle mass and in my honest opinion, shouldn’t use as a fat loss aid unless you’re willing to include these two Jon negotiables!
If you’re exploring GLP-1s, please do it properly, through a medical professional, not the black market (you DO NOT know what you’re injecting into your body) and please never use it without a personalised health strategy that protects your long-term wellbeing.
If you’re unsure where to get started, ask me and I’ll provide you guidance.
3) A Natural Alternative: Berberine
Not wanting or ready for pharmaceuticals?
Berberine might be a natural solution for you. This compound:
- Mimics some effects of GLP-1 and metformin
- Helps regulate blood sugar
- Improves insulin sensitivity
- Supports fat metabolism
It’s been used in traditional medicine for centuries and may help if you’re struggling with midsection weight gain and sugar cravings, but always check with a healthcare provider before introducing new supplements, especially if you’re on medication.
My Personal Fat Loss Protocol Support
I’m walking this path too. Here’s what I’m doing right now to support my body:
- Resistance training 2-3 times per week
- 25-30g protein per main meal
- Prioritising sleep – aiming for 7-9 hours
- Supporting my hormones with HRT and supplements (D3+K2, magnesium glycinate, omega 3, creatine, protein powder, ashwagandha & lion’s mane)
And I’m doing it all without extremes. No crash diets, no guilt, no punishing workouts, just supportive strategies that work with my body, not against it and you’re very welcome to steal this strategy.
